Supplies you need for Painting and Drawing Class:
A sketch book...Pick a nice one so that you can use it for multiple years, I like the hardbound ones because the spirals tend to fall apart. I also like mixed media paper because it can take alot of abuse.
Color pencils.....get your own, crayola are fine, the prismacolor scholastic set is not that expensive with the 40% coupon from Michaels.
Paintbrushes. I found all of the sets photographed at Michaels for less than 10 dollars. Don't buy the little kid ones, they fall apart and get a variety of different sizes and shapes. White Talkon are my favorite to use with both acrylic and watercolor.
You also need a pencil, additional useful supplies to have handy are an eraser, ruler and pencil sharpener.

ALL Painting and Drawing Students will need to have two more pages of your books done on Monday March 25. If you are a senior, you should think about doing 4-5 pages, this way you can get ahead.
On Monday you will be using an image in your book to create a plan for a painting.
The painting plan will need to include a composition, color scheme ( you are limited to 4 colors) and detailed drawing.
There are several different sizes to choose from. Painting 3s will get first choice.
Good Luck with your testing!
There are two weeks left before spring break. You will need to have your book well underway with the end pages and three other pages finished and your prints done. I am giving you more than enough class time to work on these, so I will be giving you participation points each day. If you have your phone out, you will automatically loose those points.
Remember your books are designed for you to improve your drawing skills working on a subject that you are passionate about. We will all be looking at your books at the end of the semester, so do a good job!
Don't make something that you don't care about!
The next three pages of your books are due on March 8. Remember that a page is the whole spread.
Your edition of three prints must also be done by March 8 at the latest.
BOOKS....
So by Tuesday the 29th, you will all have a finished bound book.
You will need to choose something that you need to improve upon as your subject for your book.
Throughout the semester, you will have assignments so that at the end of the year you will have a completed artists book.
The first assignment will be to design the cover and endpages.
This is due on Friday February 8.
WELCOME BACK! I hope you had a great break and are ready to work!
Our first project this semester is small and should go quickly.
Eun Hyung Kim: Crumpled paper narratives
You are going to create a visual response to a favorite song or poem of your choice (with in reason, my humps might not be an appropriate choice) Because this is visual use of words should be limited.
You are going to create a visual response to a favorite song or poem of your choice (with in reason, my humps might not be an appropriate choice) Because this is visual use of words should be limited.
- Choose a song
- Crumple or fold your paper.
- Use the creases to divide up your paper.
- Using black and white (pen, india ink, or pencil) create images in response to your song or poem in the sections.
- Figure out how to display your piece. You should turn it into a small sculpture, since it is so light weight, it would be nice if it could hang on the wall.
- A finished cohesive piece that is visually interesting.
- Original imagery that limits the use of words. (If using words, make sure to write them in an interesting font so they are visually interesting.)
- A full range of value and a good amount of contrast.
- Superior craftsmanship
- Interesting display.
SOME ART WORK FROM FIRST SEMESTER!!! HAVE A GREAT WINTER BREAK!!!
Shirt made by N. James
PAINTING AND DRAWING FINAL EXAM:
All students will create a T-shirt design and then put it on the shirt.
The Design is your choice, if you are unable to narrow it down, you should create an “ugly holiday sweater” design.
All painting ones and twos will use the freezer paper stencil technique. I will demonstrate this on Friday December 14.
Painting Threes have the option of creating a silk screen. If you are to do this you may use no more than 2 colors and you must create at least three shirts and one print on nice paper.
Shirts will be graded on the following:
* Quality of Design
*Color choices
*Craftsmanship
*Creativity
*Completion
Your final will also consist of a clean up job. Lightly cleaning your table does not count for full credit.

Just a quick reminder, your obsession projects, both the painting and the 6 weeks choice project are due next Friday, the 14th of December. You will be critiquing these projects Friday and it is also the official last day of the semester so NO LATES!!!
STORM TROOPER PHOTOS LINK: http://hiconsumption.com/2012/10/star-wars-stormtroopers-taking-the-day-off-work-series/
OBSESSION: the domination of one's thoughts or feelings by a persistent idea, image, desire, etc.
Your next assignments will be focused around something that you will need to be obsessed with for the next 5 weeks.
*The first thing you will need to do is to choose something that you can be obsessed about that you can create a painting and a 6 weeks project around.
Your obsession can be almost anything (an artist, art movement, type of car, period in history, a particular fashion movement, animal, song lyrics, poem, etc)
Your obsession can not be the following mostly for obvious reasons: boyfriend or girlfriend, cartoon or cartoon style (copyright and medium we are using, and what you can actually learn by painting these things are just a few of the reasons) illegal paraphernalia, a direct copy of someone else's work, or Justin Bieber (pop stars).
* In the past students have chosen some of the following things to be obsessed with; mannequins, victorian masks, taxidermy, rubber ducks, cats.
We will go to the library and for two days you are to find out as much as you can about your obsession. On a typed piece of paper that contains complete sentences and citing of references, you are to find out the following about your obsession:
*Five interesting facts: these should be out of ordinary information that are not common knowledge.
*Two artists that have used your obsession in their work
*Two historical events that included your obsession
*Two images for resources you can just give me the link to them. You should print them while you are at the library so that you have them.
You must use at least three different sources for finding your information, wikipedia can not be one.
You will complete two projects about your obsession.
This first one will be your class project for this six weeks. You will develop a painting about your obsession.
*Your painting must have a well developed complex composition that is balanced and uses positive and negative space effectively.
*You must plan out a sophisticated color scheme that shows you understand the basic concepts of color theory. (Limit your palette and NO PUKING RAINBOWS)
*Your painting should have a foreground, mid-ground and background.
*Your painting should have a full range of value and show mass and depth through lights and darks.
*Your painting must show superior craftsmanship.
I strongly suggest that you make a few sketches of ideas before you start painting.
The second project you will need to complete will be your six weeks project. For this project you need to teach the viewer something about your obsession visually. It is your choice on how you decide to do this. You could create an artist book, a comic book, a sculpture, a drawing, another painting, etc. Again, please keep words to a minimum and make it visual.
This project will be graded on the following:
*Creativity in putting it together
*Visual impact
*Composition, color choices, and craftsmanship
*The final piece should show at least five hours of work.
Your book page, post-it and string 6 weeks project is due on NOVEMBER 5 this is a C day Monday. If you do not hand it in on time it will be a 0 for the report card!
Your monochromatic or complementary color painting from life is due by next Tuesday October 30. We will be going to the library on Wednesday and Thursday of next week. Bring in what you need to take home paint if you need to work on it this weekend.
Second Six Weeks project for Painting and Drawing students:
This project is designed to take less time creating, but requires you to really think about how to use your materials in a unique way.
You will use one book page, two post-its and a piece of string (all provided by me) to create one piece of 2-d or 3-d artwork.
*Your piece must use all four items to create a cohesive work that shows an emphasis, balanced composition, value and contrast.
*You may use, pencil, pen, colored pencils, ink, paint or markers to finish your piece. (If you use color, limit your palette, NO PUKING RAINBOWS)
*You may cut your pieces, add things to them, etc but you must have all of them in the final image.
*If you paint, you may want to attach your pieces to a stronger surface. Do not use poster board or foam core. Tell me what you are doing and I will help you to determine an appropriate surface.
This piece is due on November 5 no lates!
Artists who use one or more of your components: Donn Kenn, Nava Lubelski, Hanna Hermans and Lital Gold
